Essential Montenegro Sailing Tips

📅

Best Time to Sail

May–June and September–October offer ideal sailing conditions — warm, calm, and far less crowded than peak July/August.

🪪

Charter License

For bareboat charter, you need a valid ICC or national sailing licence. We also offer skippered charters if you prefer a captain on board.

Marina Etiquette

Always book marinas in advance in July–August. Porto Montenegro and ACI Budva fill up fast during peak season.

🌬️

Local Winds

The Bora (NE) and Jugo (SE) are the main winds. Boka Bay is protected — perfect for beginners. Open waters suit more experienced sailors.

🏴

Cruising Permit

Non-EU flagged vessels must obtain a cruising permit upon entry. We handle all paperwork for our charter fleet.

🐟

Local Provisions

Stock up at Tivat's market or Budva's supermarkets before setting sail. Fresh seafood is best bought directly from fishermen at anchor.

Everything You Need to Know

Common questions about yacht charter in Montenegro, boat hire, and sailing along the Adriatic coast.

For bareboat charter you need a recognised sailing qualification — an ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal Skipper, or equivalent national licence. If you don't hold a licence, we offer skippered charters where a professional captain sails the vessel while you enjoy the experience. No licence is needed for crewed luxury charters or day boat hires.
The sailing season runs from April to October. The sweet spots are May–June and September–October — warm sea temperatures (22–26°C), consistent winds, and significantly fewer crowds than July and August. July and August are peak season with excellent weather but busy marinas. Book well ahead for high season.
We operate charter bases at Tivat (Porto Montenegro marina), Budva, and Herceg Novi. Tivat is the most popular starting point due to its world-class marina facilities. Budva is ideal if you want to be closer to the Budva Riviera beaches and nightlife. One-way charters between bases are available on request.
Standard bareboat charter includes the yacht, all on-board safety equipment, dinghy/tender, outboard motor, bed linen and towels, and basic provisioning kit. Fuel, marina fees, port taxes, and food are at the charterer's expense. We also offer optional provisioning packages, skipper hire, and hostess services.
Day charter speedboats start from €250/day. Bareboat sailing yachts range from €800–€1,800/day depending on size and season. Crewed motor yachts start from €2,000/day, while luxury superyacht charter in Montenegro can range from €4,000–€15,000+/day. Compared to Croatia or Greece, Montenegro offers exceptional value.
Yes — one-way charters and international routes are possible. Montenegro to Croatia (Dubrovnik is only ~50 nautical miles from Herceg Novi) is a popular combination. You'll need to clear customs at the point of entry into each country. We handle all documentation for our fleet.
Yes — especially in the Bay of Kotor (Boka Bay), which is sheltered from open-sea conditions and has predictable winds. It's considered one of the best areas in the Adriatic for learning to sail. For complete beginners, we recommend a skippered charter or our beginner sailing holidays in Montenegro with on-board instruction.
APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is a prepaid budget — typically 30–35% of the charter fee — used by the captain to cover running expenses including fuel, port dues, food, drinks, and ice during your trip. Any unspent APA is returned to you at the end of the charter. It gives you full flexibility over provisions.
